Fri, 28 March 2008 Shemini Leviticus 9:1-11:47 On the eighth day following "seven days of inauguration," Aaron and his sons begin to officiate as Kohanim (priests); a fire issues forth from G-d to consume the offerings on the Altar and the Divine Presence comes to dwell in the Sanctuary. Aaron's two elder sons, Nadav and Avihu, offer a "strange fire before G-d, which He commanded them not" and die before G-d. Aaron is silent in face of his tragedy. Moses and Aaron subsequently disagree as to a point of law regarding the offerings, but Moses concedes to Aaron that Aaron is in the right. G-d commands the kosher laws, identifying the animal species permissible and forbidden for consumption. Land animals may be eaten only if they have split hooves and also chew their cud; fish must have fins and scales; a list of non-kosher birds is given, and a list of kosher insects (four types of locusts). Also in Shemini are some of the laws of ritual purity, including the purifying power of the mikvah (a pool of water meeting specified qualifications) and the wellspring. Thus the people of Israel are enjoined to "differentiate between the impure and the pure." In preparation for the upcoming festival of Passover, when every Jew had to be in a state of ritual purity, the section of Parah (Numbers 19) is added to the weekly reading this week. Parah relates the laws of the Red Heifer with which a person contaminated by contact with a dead body was purified. Comments[7] |
Sat, 22 March 2008 Tzav Leviticus 6:1-8:36 G-d instructs Moses to command Aaron and his sons regarding their duties and rights as Kohanim ("priests") who offer the korbanot (animal and meal offerings) in the Sanctuary. The fire on the Altar must be kept burning at all times. In it are burned the wholly consumed Ascending Offering; veins of fat from the Peace, Sin, and Guilt Offerings; and the "handful" separated from the Meal Offering. The Kohanim eat the meat of the Sin and Guilt Offerings and the remainder of the Meal Offering. The Peace Offering is eaten by the one who brought it, except for specified portions given to the Kohen. The holy meat of the offerings must be eaten by ritually pure persons, in their designated holy place, and within their specified time. Aaron and his sons remain within the Sanctuary compound for seven days, during which Moses initiates them into the priesthood. Comments[8] |
Sat, 8 December 2007 Hanukkah also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd Century BCE. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, and may occur from late November to late December on the Gregorian calendar. The festival is observed by the kindling of the lights of a special candelabrum, the Hanukiah, or Hanukkah Menorah, one on each night of the holiday, progressing to eight on the final night. An extra light called a shamash, (Hebrew: "guard" or "servant") is also lit each night, and is given a distinct location, usually higher or lower than the others. The purpose of the extra light is to adhere to the prohibition, specified in the Talmud (Tracate Shabbat 21b-23a), against using the Hanukkah lights for anything other than publicizing and meditating on the Hanukkah story. Hanukkah is mentioned in the deuterocanonical books of 1 Maccabees and 2 Maccabees. 1 Maccabees states: "For eight days they celebrated the rededication of the altar. Then Judah and his brothers and the entire congregation of Israel decreed that the days of the rededication...should be observed...every year...for eight days. (1 Mac.4:56-59)" According to 2 Maccabees, "the Jews celebrated joyfully for eight days as on the feast of Booths." http://cdn.libsyn.com/theshofarscall/The_Shofars_Call_Radio_Show_11.mp3 http://cdn.libsyn.com/theshofarscall/The_Shofars_Call_Radio_Show_12.mp3 Category: Hanukkah -- posted at: 2:09 PM Comments[5] |
Wed, 7 March 2007 PrintEmail Subscribe The Parshah in a Nutshell Ki Tisa Exodus 30:11-34:35 The people of Israel are told to each contribute exactly half a shekel of silver to the Sanctuary. Instructions are also given regarding the making of the Sanctuary's water-basin, anointing oil and incense. "Wise hearted" artisans Betzalel and Ahaliav are placed in charge of the Sanctuary's construction, and the people are once again commanded to keep the Shabbat. When Moses does not return when expected from Mount Sinai, the people make a Golden Calf and worship it. G-d proposes to destroy the errant nation, but Moses intercedes on their behalf. Moses descends from the mountain carrying the Tablets of the Testimony engraved with the Ten Commandments; seeing the people dancing about their idol, he breaks the Tablets, destroys the Golden Calf and has the primary culprits put to death. He then returns to G-d to say: "If You do not forgive them, blot me out from the book that You have written." G-d forgives, but says that the effect of their sin will be felt for many generations. At first G-d proposes to send His angel along with them, but Moses insists that G-d Himself accompany His people to the Promised Land. Moses prepares a new set of tablets and once more ascends the mountain, where G-d reinscribes the covenant on these Second Tablets. On the mountain Moses is also granted a vision of the divine Thirteen Attributes of Mercy. So radiant is Moses' face upon his return, that he must cover it with a veil, which he removes only to speak with G-d and to teach His laws to the people. Comments[5] |

Wed, 5 October 2005 This podcast is a special podcast featuring a recording from Chavurat HaMashiach a messianic congregation in Spokane Wa.
Join us as we celebrate the High Holy Day Rosh Hashana.
Rosh Hashana, or Jewish New Year, is at once solemn and joyful. It is solemn because of the Awe of judgment. It is joyful because it represents the hope of the future redemption of Israel.
Rosh Hashana marks the beginning of the High Holy Days. It falls on the first day of the seventh month, according to the Hebrew calendar (see Leviticus 23:23). It could occur anywhere from the first to the last week of September on the Western calendar. (Sept. 11, in 1999) It ushers in the ten days of repentance leading up to Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.
The name "Rosh Hashana" literally means "Beginning of the Year" You may wonder how this can be, since it is called the first day of the seventh month! The reason is that the Jewish calendar is built on two cycles-the religious calendar beginning in the Spring, and the civil calendar beginning in the Fall. In the Torah, the months are never named but only numbered, beginning with the month of Nisan in the early Spring, which is the first month according to the religious calendar.

Sat, 20 August 2005 Currently among the Messianic community there has been some buzz about a medieval document called the Shem Tob. This document is a Hebrew version of the book of Matthew. Until recently many did not hold Shem Tobs Matthew in high esteem. The text seems to differ in many ways in comparison to our Greek text of Matthew. Many have started to take another look at this document. There is a theory among some that Shem Tob a Jewish anti-missionary derived his text from the authentic Hebrew Matthew. We know from many historical texts that at some point there was a Hebrew version of Matthew but can we accept the Shem Tob as authoritative? Join Adam Ray and special guest James mason as we discuss this very controversial subject. Comments[3] |

Mon, 11 July 2005 50 Shekel (his real name: Aviad Cohen) was once described as 50 Cent minus the foul language. He became recognized for his Jewish parody rap song In Da Shul(a take on 50 Cents In Da Club), Cohen has also been written up in the New York Magazine, New York Post, Blender, Esquire and the Forward. Cohen however, has recently announced that he became a follower of Yeshua (Jesus) and as you can imagine the response from the Orthodox Jewish community has been very negative. Many of the same media outlets that once praised his Jewish rap parodies are now quick to attack and slander Cohen for his acceptance of Yeshua. Cohen who once was referred to as the worlds most Kosher MC, now describes himself as a completed Jew. Within the last few weeks Cohen has dropped the title 50 Shekel and is now going solely by his G-d given name Aviad Cohen. Just because Cohen has come to the Messiah does not mean that his passion for music has dwindled, Cohen is currently working on a CD titled For His Glory, which is less hip hop parody and more electronic praise pop. Many of the songs featured on the soon to be released CD can be heard at www.50shekel.com. Listen to an interview with Aviad Cohen as I Adam Ray go strait to the source and talk to Cohen about what is really happening in his life. Mon, 6 June 2005 There are many mysteries in scripture but few are more intriguing than the accounts of Genesis 6. Is it really true that a race of giants called Nephilim were alive on the earth? Is this merely a myth? Why do we have so many extra Biblical accounts of giants such as the book of Enoch and the Dead Sea scrolls? How do these works compare to Genesis 6 as well as other Biblical accounts of Giants? Is there any modern proof of giants such as fossils records that would further prove that Giants once roamed the earth? Join The Shofar's Call Radio Show as we deal with the subject of giants.
